NEA Planning Task 2 - My Mood Board

The brief I chose was to create a magazine and a website. I have to create the front cover and contents pages of the first two editions of my magazine (so two front covers and content pages total) as well as two pages for the working website of the magazine, which is centred around current affairs. The target audience for such magazine are 16-25 year old middle and upmarket consumers who are socially conscious. My audience in particular value aesthetics and information, so creating a visual with depth for my magazine cover is a priority to hold their interest, whilst combined with compelling captions adding information around the topic of the issue.

Introduction

In this task I will be looking at how font, images and colours influence my target audience and how to use them in my magazine. Through technical codes surround symbols and connotations signifying different meanings, I will be seeing how these influence my audience. I will also be creating a visual representation of this by creating a mood board.

Main task

Summary

By creating mood boards, it allows me to get a sense for the overarching vibe for my website and my magazine. This helps me narrow down the aesthetic of my products to help streamline it into a real product that would attract viewers. An example of this is how my colour scheme will be of muted colours, with overarching cool blue and grey tones with creams and beige's mixed within, creating a sense of sophistication with the connotations of street life. In terms of shot type, Medium and long shots will be best suited for the magazine, as having the focus on the model and their attire creates a sense of personableness whilst also establishing them as representations of the topic and readership. I will be using a narrow sans-serif font, most seen in fashion magazines to create the connotations of quality and class accustomed to middle and upmarket audiences. In terms of mis-en-scene, setting will play a key role in establishing representation of suburban areas, such as parks and streets, to best appeal to the socially conscious nature of the audience.

Through the use of parody, I will replicate Vogue magazine in layout to gain the connotations of quality and status that my audience would seek out. Equally, I will reference real life issues and reference real life people to help establish quality in the work and make it seem more current to aid in establishing audience interest in current affairs. Through a positive representation of women and people of colour, I can use bell hook's theory to establish an intersectional approach to defeating oppressive ideologies. Equally, I will encourage Hall's reception theory in leaving interpretation open for audiences to decode themselves in a preferred, negotiated or oppositional way.
