Task 5 - Institutional Research
Introduction
In this post I will be assessing how the owner of the media company who my brief details, Dennis Publishing, influences its products through its ethos and vision. I will be looking at the type of company it is as well as the type of products it produces. Doing this will allow me to incorporate similar ideas into my own work in order to create a realistic product they might produce. By understanding their ideals, I will be able to fundamentally shape my own product around these ideologies.
Task
The company my product is being made for is Dennis Publishing.
They mostly work in print media products, but have connected websites which cover topics such as cars and gaming.
Dennis Publishing is an independent publishing company that has also expanded to Dennis Online, where they post online editions of newspapers and magazines.
Dennis Publishing makes money through a subscriptions service on their website, where it lists out all their magazines and how much it costs to subscribe for instalments. These can range from £1 (Auto Express) to almost £50 (The Week). They also offer advertising spaces in their products. One of their successful magazines, MoneyWeek, can cost up to £4000-£5000 for a full page spread advertisement.
Dennis Publishing's vision is to become the most international media group and to grow Brtain's loved media brands, bringing new audiences to inspire, inform and entertain. Their core values are innovation and efficiency; to be long term and agile; to be collaborative and individually bold and to be professional and fun. Their vision in growing their brands reflects in how their current affairs products are self-proclaimed to be the fastest growing in numbers in the UK, showing they they are indeed growing their audiences. Their values are also reflected in the numerous brands that are subsidiaries to them, seeing that they are indeed thinking in the long term. Examples of this include specialist cycling magazines (Cyclist) and even niche gaming magazines such as Minecraft World and the Independent and Unofficial Guide to Fortnite.

My personal interpretation of such is that they want to have a broad range of magazines that cover a variety of interests, niche or mainstream, while also bolstering their almost patriotic view of increasing British companies' audiences. These magazines need to be helpful to the readers while also being entertaining, having a blend of information and entertainment.
Conclusion
In my media product, I intend to incorporate their ideas of covering a range of different interests by having new ideas, tackling interests of a socially aware, younger but mid to upmarket audience, something they haven't done yet. This directly expands their range of audiences they have magazines which appeal to, but also enhances their longevity in the expansion, furthering their audience. Also, being UK based myself, this lines up with their want to increase UK based brands audiences. Their belief in professionalism and fun will also be met, as professionalism is almost a prerequisite when it comes to mid to upmarket audiences due to their class, whilst fun is a must due to their younger age, without such fun, they wouldn't want to read the magazine.
