Task 6 - Producer/Director Research
Introduction
In this post I will be researching a range of various photographers, noting their style and use of conventions in the magazine covers they produce. To do so, I will be referencing existing products to gain ideas for my own while also studying the most suitable style and conventions to include, for both the main task and my website. Through studying other photographers, I will be able to produce a media text that takes in their styles to most effectively appeal to my target audience.
Main Task
Below I will detail 3 photographers and their products.
Annie Leibovitz
Photograph Examples

Comments
- Clear emphasis on the human face and emotions - blank background and plain clothing (except for characterisation in the last picture) - raw and unfiltered
- Highlight on the intimacy drawn from mid-close up shots
- Consistent use of eye contact to hold audience attention
- Use of dull, darker colours and if not, black and white
- Mainly focused on celebrities or characters portrayed by celebrities
- Clearly mainly works within celebrity portraits
Mario Sorrenti
Examples

Comments
- Consistent style of black and white images (monochromatic) - juxtaposing colours
- Use of ripples and folds to add dimension and texture to the props (water, fabric)
- Mid-long shots used but various use of low/high angles
- Look into the expressions of softness and harshness - focus on human aspects
- Complex body shape adds intrigue - concealment of body adds a layer of mystery - consistent through three images to a degree - perhaps a comment on the nature of humans concealing themselves
- Changing settings and props - have a varying degree of use and a role in the photo
- Changing degrees of light
Pamela Hanson
Examples

Comments
- Continuation of muted colours and monochrome
- More variation in camera angles and shots, ranging from long to mid shots
- Heavier use of props - mis-en-scene helps creative an immersive narrative
- Mostly focused on people - doing ordinary things
- Interesting yet simple body positions and expressions
- Varying uses of light
- More eye contact
- Use of setting to aid characterisation
Conclusion
Overall, this task has shown me that having a consistent style of photograph is important - be it in the lighting, main focus and colour. but having variation and creative freedom with the techniques such as camera angles and props allows for a more immersive picture for audiences to connect to and interpret. Eye contact is another important feature as it is stark and will immediately draw the readers eye to the focus of the image, being the person.
