NEA Planning Task 1 - My Audience

Introduction

In this post I am going to be going into depth about my target audience through the use of a survey of my peers to help steer what I want my product to achieve by finding out the wants of my audience and understanding them to a better extent.

Main Task - My findings

Through my survey, I have narrowed down the interests and ideas of my target audience in order to establish a magazine that best represents their wants and needs when it comes to both a magazine and the connected website. This has thus enabled me to optimise on my approach to the product and keep their interests in mind when it comes to production.

Audience information

The target audience for my product are 16-25 year olds of an upmarket to middle market background with particular interests regarding social issues as they are socially conscious.

From my survey, I can deduce that, from a magazine cover, they value aesthetics the most. This is apparent from the overwhelming majority favouring good models and secondly colouration. As a result, it shows that I should place a pleasing aesthetic in order to capture the eye of an audience and develop a house style that best captures this.

Additionally, through the use of the survey, I can see the conventions expected from a current affairs magazine and apply that to allow for not only a magazine the appeals to what audiences expect, but also use that as a tool in order to subvert stereotypes of the genre and go for a less expected topic, such as occupation and music. This enables me to create a more unique magazine experience in order to distinguish myself from any competition in a competitive market.

In terms of tone, the majority believed that a blend of both satire and formality would best suit the magazine and given how current affairs usually pertain to hard topics that are quite severe, I think that finding a balance in addressing certain topics with due seriousness as well as balancing the entertainment of the audience in terms of tone.
Diversity is another aspect the audience found particularly necessary, given the socially conscious nature of the magazine's target audience. By assessing how important diversity was to my audience, and witnessing how valued it is in their responses, I can use this information to select models that best serve their interests to ensure I represent a range of ethnicities, genders and interests.
I also inquired as to how strong their views are on social issues. By determining the strength of their views, it allows me to know best as to how to address the topics my magazine covers will be about. From my survey, I see most have somewhat of a strong opinion on social others, with the rest having more of a strong opinion than otherwise. This tells me that I should address topics head on to appease the strength of their interests.

I also asked what colour scheme they would expect and therefore believe to be most suitable for a current affairs magazine. This would help narrow down my ideas based around the muted colours I deduced to be most fitting from my prior research. Through this answer, I can narrow down a house style that best represents and fulfils the audiences expectations.

In terms of the website, I tried to find out what an audience would most value. From my survey, I found that ease of access and a sleek interface is something highly valued, as well as something that has multiple things to look at, which fits well for the requirement of a video. This allows me to start coming up with ideas for a simplistic and easy to access model that still has multiple things to view and access.

Upon asking what they sought what the website should be used for, the majority wanted information regarding the topic of the magazine cover as well as information regarding its production. This enabled me to narrow down content to add to my website which I need to be able to integrate into ideas stemming around its presentation.

Conclusion
Overall, I can see that my audience is 16-25 years old of an upmarket to middle market (ABC1) audience with a clear interest in social issues (as describe in the brief). It is clear they have strong feelings towards social issues and enjoys the aesthetic of a magazine as well as the information surrounding it. They also value diversity and the ability to juggle serious topics with the appropriate amount of seriousness and informality. They also have an interest in a range of social issues, mostly centred around politics and health. And for a website they equally value the looks and the ease of access, on top of the information about the magazine that will be presented with it.
