Online Cross-Media Product: Website

In this post, I will be highlighting what I would've done differently for my website if COVID hadn't prohibited my ability to add certain content.

Images

The images on the slideshow on the home page would have been original images rather than blank colours, similar to the one's below I used as reference points. An over the shoulder shot used for the 'Woman at Work' (Image 1) and high key lighting to make the character seem approachable and likeable whilst also respected, lighting having connotations of empowerment. The setting would be similar too, professional but with a more subtle, lighter brown colours as to fit the aesthetic of the magazine more. Similarly, the slide for 'Politics' (Image 2) would be a close-up with the model looking away, to give a sense of dismissal of the audience and the power that signifies, representing his position of strength. The similar setting of a council chamber (or what would look like such) would've also been used as its befitting the political nature. For the 'City Life' slide (Image 3), an overwhelming establishing shot of the city, juxtaposed with the silhouette shot of a person,  would be used to give a sense of scale and link to ideas around to adjusting to the bustling life in a city the article would detail. The ambiguity of the silhouette would also position the audience as the silhouette and enhance the overwhelming size.

Below are the inspirations behind each intended picture.

Audio/Visual

The audio section would also be fit with a visual section. It would be set up as a sit down interview, with the model in a 'studio' (with a blank white background) dressed in modern business-wear similar to already pictured in the original images used. It would then be cut through videos of her working, showing dedication and hard work. This would include sitting at a desk on a computer, sitting at the head of a table in a meeting, giving a presentation, all with the audio playing. The aim of such would be to push Dennis Publishing's goals of inspiration, as 16-25 year old audiences would be breaking into the business environment and therefore would be more receptive to a positive message. An interview-like set up would also be good as it would provide a level of personableness, which would aid in balancing Dennis Publishing's idea of fun and professionalism.

Shot list - Introductory mid-close up shot of the interview, cut to working at a desk at a computer, cut to sitting at a meeting table, cut back to the interview shot, cut to giving and presentation, cut to speaking to a group, final cut back to the interview shot.

Analysis

Through intertextuality, I drew inspiration from the 'Current Affairs' website design through colour, alluding to their designs, whilst incorporating elements from 'Vogue' in the hover box designs illuminating when you go over them. This was intended to meld the upmarket/midmarket audience of 'Vogue' with the interests of the audience from 'Current Affairs'. The use of dark grey and black also connotes professionalism whilst also intertextually reference 'TIME' magazine's dark colours.

I used links to not only Dennis Publishing's website, but also links to social media, specifically Instagram with its own column (as Instagram is most popular was 16-25 year old audiences). I also encouraged subscription throughout the website, and linked other stories after the featured story to ensure a connection with audiences. Using a hashtag, I plan to encourage conversation to draw active audiences to the website and magazine on these social medias through convergence.
